Delaware SPCA Paws for a Cause dogs complete training

The Delaware SPCA recently announced that Sire and Vinnie, the inaugural members of the Paws for a Cause program with the Sussex Correctional Institution, have completed their training. In addition, Ben, a coon hound/Great Dane mix, and KiKi, a pitbull/terrier mix, have been recruited into the program.

“We are so pleased with the progress Vinnie and Sire have made. The boys are available for adoption from our Georgetown shelter, and I expect they will find forever homes quickly thanks to the men who have trained them,” said Chris Motoyoshi, interim executive director of the Delaware SPCA.

The Paws for a Cause Program utilizes volunteer inmates to train adoptable dogs from the Delaware SPCA’s Georgetown shelter. It benefits the dogs to spend more time with humans, and their adoptability improves with basic obedience training. Volunteer inmates from the prison’s honors building receive instruction once a week from a volunteer certified dog trainer. The trainer assesses the dogs and gives the inmates custom assignments for that week.

“The new recruits, Ben and KiKi, are so happy to be temporarily residing at the Sussex Correctional Institution. And the men are excited to begin training them,” said Motoyoshi. “Ben and KiKi are living with their inmate trainers, and working on their training assignments each day.”

Inmates in the program are Brian Fortt, Joshua Callahan, Session Boyd, Raymond Bradley, Allen Jolley, Jeffrey Nave, Chase Fehrenbach and Robert Hassett.

Anyone interested in Sire or Vinnie can call the Georgetown shelter, 302-856-6361, to set up an appointment to meet them at the shelter. Anyone interested in adopting any of the dogs in the program can also call the shelter.
