Tucson: I am Lennox Pitbull. BSL sucks.

Pitbulls make great pets

Pitbulls make great pets

This is a sad story that I had been following on Facebook. On May 19, 2010, Lennox, a 5 year old American Bull dog Labrador mix was wrongfully seized from his loving family home by Belfast City Council Dog Wardens. Lennox committed no crime nor did any member of the public complain about him. Three Belfast City Council Dog Wardens came to his home unannounced and removed Lennox against the protests of his family who had gone the extra mile to create barriers for safety and security and had socialized Lennox as he lived with children, specifically a disabled child. They were best friends.

For two years Lennox was kept in a cell surrounded by his own excrement. The family was not permitted to visit and were never informed of his condition. Even though thousands of people and rescue organizations worldwide tried to remove Lennox from the country, from this hell on earth, he was executed two years later on July 13, 2012, by the Dog Wardens in Ireland.

According to the blog, Save Lennox, Lennox was a puppy when his owners had him neutered, licensed, insured, DNA registered, Pet Safe registered and micro chipped and although the Belfast City Council have issued a dog license for Lennox for the last five years and continue to do so today, the Council found the need to classify him as a Pitbull type dog and murder him.

While it’s too late for Lennox, BSL (breed specific legislation) is BS. Today this vile practice affects Pitbulls but it could be any breed or any mixed breed – Rottweilers, Dobermans, Greyhounds, Chihuahuas. BSL just doesn’t exist in backward Belfast but also in the United States.

The problem is not the breed or any breed but rather backyard breeders and irresponsible owners. Punish the deed not the breed! Pitbulls were once called “nanny dogs” – what happened to their image?
